Summer Hibiscus drink

Summer is here, and the need to stay hydrated is real! How about turning that boring water into a refreshing and beneficial chilled drink?

 

From ancient records the Hibiscus has been known to be a traditional medicine with several benefits. It is rich in antioxidants and helps control blood pressure and diabetes. The beauty benefits is also said to be numerous-for both skin and hair. It is said to promote even skin tone and has lots of anti aging properties helping the skin look firm and young. Lately I had read in an article that it is now called the "Natural Botox". 

This drink is also very low in calories adding to the benefits! Super easy to prepare.

Ingredients

  1. Petals from 15-20 fresh hibiscus flowers as in the above picture. To be washed very well. Try getting them from a source that you are sure don't use any chemicals.

  2. Juice of one medium sized lemon

  3. Honey to taste - Use a really good quality honey, it makes a difference

  4. 8 cups water

  5. Mint leaves (optional)

Method

  1. In a deep saucepan, (preferably stainless steel so you can see the color) pour the water and add the washed petals. Only the petals, discard the other parts.

  2. Let it boil well for a good 10-15 minutes until you see the petals have turn pale and the water has infused to a reddish magenta color. Allow this water to cool down and you will notice it has become a deep maroon shade. 

  3. To this add the lemon juice and you will now see the color become a deep orange shade.

  4. Add the honey next, I used about half a cup wild flower honey. If you don't care about the calories use any simple sugar syrup to sweeten.

  5. Stir well and pour the entire drink into a pitcher and store in the refrigerator. You can add mint leaves to this for an additional flavor. The drink stays for about a week in the refrigerator. Serve chilled!
